Measuring Your Dog

Measure rather than going by the weight column. A barrel-chested Staffie and a lean Whippet can weigh the same and sit two sizes apart on girth. The weight figures are a sanity check, not the answer.

1. Chest: soft tape around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, with your dog standing.
2. Neck: around the base of the neck, where the strap will sit.
3. Add 2–3 cm to both before comparing to the chart - that's a comfortable fit rather than a tight one.

Between sizes, take the larger one. Every strap adjusts down, none adjust up.

Once it's on, two fingers should slide comfortably under any strap. Walk for a minute and check again - harnesses settle, and the girth strap usually wants a small adjustment after the first few steps.

Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent and air dry away from direct heat. Skip the machine and the tumble dryer - buckles crack against a drum, and heat both weakens the weave and degrades the reflective strips. Rinse after beach walks, since salt and grit work into the buckles and stiffen them. Check the stitching where the handle meets the body every few weeks; on any handled harness, that's the joint carrying the load.

Will it stop my dog pulling?
The handle gives you far better close control, which solves the immediate problem in tight spots. But a leash clipped between the shoulders doesn't discourage pulling - that's the same geometry a sled dog pulls from. Can I lift my dog by the handle?
For short assists - over a stile, into a car boot, out of the path of a hazard - yes, and the widened design is built for exactly that. It isn't for sustained lifting or carrying a dog any distance. For dogs with ongoing mobility problems, a proper support sling is the right tool.

Is the reflective strip enough for night walking?
It makes your dog visible in headlights from a useful distance, which is the main risk on unlit roads. On genuinely dark lanes, pair it with a light on the collar or leash - reflective material only works when something shines at it.

How is this different from a lightweight mesh harness?
Oxford cloth is heavier and tougher, and this one has the reinforced handle and reflective strips. If your dog is small, calm and mainly walks in daylight, a lighter mesh harness may suit better. If your dog is strong, walks in the dark, or you want a handle, this is the one.
